5 Color Tips for Your 2026 Project

5 Color Tips for Your 2026 Project

The colors you choose can completely change the feel of your space. To make your 2026 project easier, here are the top five tips professional designers rely on most:

1) Decide Warm or Cool First

Begin by deciding if you want your space to feel warm or cool. Warm colors make a room feel cozy and welcoming, while cool colors create a calm, modern atmosphere. Picking this first helps all your other colors work together.

2) Consider Light Reflectance (LRV)

LRV, or Light Reflectance Value, shows how much light a paint color reflects:

  • High LRV (70+) brightens dark rooms.
  • Medium LRV (40–60) balances the space.
  • Low LRV (10–30) adds drama and depth.

FAQ: What exactly is LRV, and where do I find it on paint samples?

LRV measures how much light a color reflects on a scale from 0 (absorbs all light) to 100 (reflects all light). Higher LRV colors make a room feel brighter, while lower LRV colors create a cozy or dramatic effect. You can usually find the LRV listed on paint sample cards or online for each color. Understanding it ahead of time helps prevent surprises after painting.

3) Let Architecture Guide Your Choices

Color should complement your home’s structure. High ceilings can handle deeper tones, while lighter shades make low ceilings feel taller. Bold colors work well on features like columns, stairways, or accent walls.

4) Test Colors in Every Light

Paint looks different under sunlight, LED, or fluorescent lighting. Place sample swatches on different walls and observe them throughout the day.

FAQ: How do I test paint colors without painting the whole wall?

Use small sample pots or peel-and-stick swatches to see the color in real life before committing.

5) Add One Bold Accent

A single, intentional pop can define the space. Try deep teal, moody gray, rich green, or warm terracotta to add character while keeping the rest of the room calm.

FAQ: How do I choose which wall or feature to use as a bold accent?

Look for natural focal points, like a fireplace, wall, staircase, or the wall you see first when entering the room.

Pro Tip: Unsure about a bold color? Choose a slightly softer or less saturated version of your favorite hue.

Christmas Near N’ Far

Christmas Near N’ Far

Christmas is full of traditions that make the season bright, but at the center of it all is the celebration of Jesus Christ’s birth. And from the U.S. to countries around the world, there’s no shortage of creative and meaningful ways people celebrate this season of hope.

The Pickle Ornament (German… or Maybe American?)

The idea of hiding a pickle-shaped ornament in the Christmas tree has become a quirky favorite in many American homes. The first person to find it on Christmas morning wins a special gift or good luck for the year. Although often said to come from Germany, most Germans have never heard of it, making it a charming mystery and a fun surprise for families who love a good holiday hunt.

Luminary Nights (Southwest U.S.)

In New Mexico and parts of the Southwest, neighborhoods are illuminated by paper-bag lanterns called luminarias or farolitos. These warm lights were originally used to symbolize the way being lit on the night Jesus was born. Today they line streets, rooftops, and sidewalks on Christmas Eve, creating peaceful scenes that honor the journey Mary and Joseph made to Bethlehem.

The “Christmas Ship” (Pacific Northwest)

Each December in Seattle, the historic Argosy Christmas Ship sails from port to port with live choir performances on board. Families gather along the shorelines to listen, sing, and admire the reflection of the lights on the water.

Kentucky Fried Christmas (Japan)

In Japan, millions of families eat KFC for Christmas dinner. The tradition started because of a clever marketing campaign in the 1970s and now you have to reserve your bucket WEEKS in advance. Nothing says “joy to the world” like a drumstick and mashed potatoes.

Shoe-Stuffing Surprise (Iceland)

For 13 nights leading up to Christmas, kids leave their shoes by the window. Each night, one of Iceland’s 13 Santa-like “Yule Lads” visits. Some are friendly, and some… steal sausages. Good kids get candy in their shoes; naughty ones get a potato.

At the Heart of It All

From glowing lanterns to quirky tree ornaments, Christmas traditions bring fun and creativity to the season, but the true celebration is the miracle of Christ’s birth. Jesus came as a baby to bring hope, peace, and salvation to the world, and that is the greatest gift we could ever receive.

From all of us at Indiana Painting, may your Christmas be filled with joy, laughter, and the hope that Christ brings.

Wishing you a blessed and joyous Christmas!

How Interior Paint Colors Influence Mood and Productivity

How Interior Paint Colors Influence Mood and Productivity

Have you ever walked into a room and had your stress levels instantly plummet? Or sat in a waiting room that just seemed to amp up your anxiety? You might think the lighting or the furniture is the culprit, but the truth is that it’s probably the color on the walls that is really making the difference.

Paint is more than just a protective coating or a pretty face – it’s a powerful tool that can actually affect how we feel and behave. Whether you’re a homeowner aiming to turn your house into a home or a business owner trying to get your employees working at their most efficient, getting a grip on color psychology is a must.

At Indiana Painting Company, we’ve spent over 20 years transforming spaces across Central Indiana and we know that the right shade can turn a house into a home and a drab office into a place where people want to go to work. At Indiana Painting Company we will show you just how your color choices can impact your daily life, and how to pick the perfect palette for your needs.

What is color psychology, anyway?

What is color psychology, anyway?

Colour psychology is the study of how different hues make us feel and behave. While your personal taste may play a part, some colors trigger the same emotional responses in almost everyone.

Generally, colors fall into one of two categories:

Warm colors: reds, oranges and yellows

These colors make us feel warm and fuzzy, but if you use them too aggressively they can also give us the old heebie-jeebies. In interior design, they’re often linked with energy and activity.

Cool colors: blues, greens and purples

These chill us out, calm us down and can even make us feel a bit down. They’re often used to create a soothing vibe.

How to pick colors for your home

Protect Your Indiana Home with Quality Interior Paint

Your home is your sanctuary, so the colors you choose should be the ones that create the atmosphere you want in each room. Here’s a quick rundown on how to apply color psychology to your living space.

Living Rooms and Social Spaces

Living rooms are where families hang out and guests come to be entertained, so the color scheme you choose should make them feel welcome and at ease. Warm neutrals like beige, taupe or soft grey create a really inviting atmosphere. If you want to get people chatting, consider lighter colors or soft yellows.

Bedrooms

BeSince bedrooms are all about rest, cool colors are the way to go. Soft blues, lavenders, and muted greens are scientifically proven to calm us down and help us sleep. Avoid bright reds or oranges like the plague, as these colors are guaranteed to keep you up all night.

Kitchens & Dining Areas

Kitchens are the heart of the home and bright, clean colors like whites and soft yellows can make them feel spotless and energizing. Here’s a fun fact: red is known to get the appetite going (which is why you see it in so many diners and fast-food logos).

Home Offices

With more and more of us working from home, home offices have become a really important space. To keep eye strain to a minimum and help us stay focused, green is a great choice. AIf you need to buckle down and concentrate for long periods, blue is the color of choice.

Making the most of commercial interiors for your business

Making the most of commercial interiors for your business

For business owners, paint choices are a smart investment. The right color scheme can make or break how your customers perceive your brand and how well your team works.

Corporate Offices

Productivity is the name of the game in an office setting. Blue is a real brain-starter. It helps us focus and concentrate, but too much of it can give off a chilly vibe. Mixing it with some green (for balance) or yellow (for creativity) can create a really dynamic and effective workspace. Quick tip: using low-VOC paints means your employees won’t have to put up with nasty odors during or after the painting process.

Retail, Restaurants & Retail

In retail, colors can really influence the customer journey. Warm colors like orange and red can encourage people to make impulse buys. In restaurants, they stimulate our appetite and help get us in and out quickly. On the flip side, high-end boutiques often use black or deep neutrals to create an air of exclusivity.

Healthcare and Waiting Rooms

Anxiety is a big problem in medical settings, so healthcare facilities should use colors that calm people down. Soft greens and blues are usually the way to go. They’re restful on the eyes and help keep patients feeling more at ease.

Tips for picking the perfect paint

Tips for picking the perfect paint

Before you commit to a color, consider these practical ideas to make sure the result matches your vision.

1. Think about your lighting

Lighting can change how a color looks. Natural daylight gives the truest picture, but incandescent bulbs bring out the warm tones and yellows. Fluorescent lighting often casts a harsh, blue tone, so always test your paint color in the room where it’s going to be, and see how it looks from morning to night.

2. Consider the room size

Color can actually change the way we perceive the size of a room. Lighter colors make small rooms feel bigger and more airy, while darker colors can make them feel more intimate, but be careful not to make a small space feel cramped.

3. Give it a test run before you commit

Never rely strictly on a small paint chip. It’s just not big enough to give you a true sense of the color. Get yourself a sample of the paint and paint a decent sized section on the wall. Live with it for a few days to see how it really feels and how it interacts with the rest of your furniture and decor.

How long does an interior painting project typically take?

The duration of an interior painting project can vary depending on the size and complexity of the job. For smaller projects, such as painting a single room, the work is typically completed within 1-2 days. This includes preparation, painting, and cleanup. For larger projects, such as painting multiple rooms or an entire home, the process may take several days to a week. Factors like the condition of the walls, the number of coats required, and any additional details like intricate trim work can also affect the timeline. During our initial consultation, we’ll provide you with a detailed quote and timeline so you know exactly what to expect from start to finish.

What kind of prep work do I need to do before the painters arrive?

Our team takes care of most of the preparation work, so you don’t have to worry about the hassle. We handle tasks like moving furniture, covering floors and other surfaces, and preparing the walls by filling holes, sanding, and priming if necessary. However, we do ask that you remove any fragile or valuable items from the area being painted to ensure their safety. This includes items like picture frames, small decorations, or electronics. If there are larger items you’re concerned about, let us know during the consultation, and we’ll make a plan to keep everything protected. Our goal is to make the process as stress-free as possible for you.

Do you offer color consultation services?

Yes, absolutely! Choosing the right colors can be overwhelming, but our team is here to help. We offer professional color consultation services to guide you through the process of selecting the perfect shades for your space. Whether you’re looking for trendy modern neutrals, bold accent walls, or a cohesive color palette for your entire home, we’ll work with you to create a look that reflects your personal style and vision. We consider factors like lighting, room size, and your existing décor to ensure the final result enhances your space beautifully.

What types of paint do you use?

We pride ourselves on using high-quality paints to ensure a long-lasting and flawless finish for your project. We offer three service tiers—Good, Better, and Best—designed to fit a variety of needs and budgets. Our “Good” tier uses reliable, durable paint options, while our “Better” tier features premium paints like PPG Ultralast. For those who want the absolute best in quality and durability, our “Best” tier includes top-of-the-line paints such as Benjamin Moore Regal Select and Behr Marquee. During the consultation, we’ll discuss which option is best suited for your specific project and requirements. High-quality paint not only improves the look of your space but also ensures it stands the test of time.

Protect Your Indiana Home with Quality Interior Paint

Protect Your Indiana Home with Quality Interior Paint

Your home’s interior paint does much more than make your rooms look beautiful. In Indiana’s unique climate, with humid summers, cold winters, and fluctuating temperatures year-round, interior paint plays a fundamental role in protecting your home’s surfaces and preserving its value. At Indiana Painting Company, we help homeowners across Indiana safeguard their homes with professional interior painting that combines durability, beauty, and long-lasting protection.

Protective Power of Quality Paint

Interior hallway with a white door, runner rug, and neutral walls.

Your home’s interior walls face more challenges than you might think. From cooking steam in the kitchen to crayon marks in the playroom, everyday life takes its toll. A high-quality paint job provides essential protection against these common issues.

Guarding Against Moisture and Humidity

Indiana’s humid summers can lead to moisture buildup within your home, especially in areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. This moisture can seep into your drywall, causing it to soften, swell, and eventually grow mold and mildew. Mold not only damages your walls but also poses a health risk to your family.

Specially formulated paints, such as moisture-resistant or satin and semi-gloss finishes, create a non-porous barrier that prevents water vapor from penetrating the surface. This protective layer is essential for preventing long-term structural damage and maintaining healthy indoor air quality. Applying the right paint in these high-humidity zones is a proactive step to safeguard your home.

Standing Up to Wear and Tear

High-traffic areas like hallways, entryways, and family rooms are constantly exposed to scuffs, scratches, and stains. Kids, pets, and the general hustle and bustle of daily life can quickly leave your walls looking worn and dirty.

Durable, high-quality paints are designed to withstand this daily grind. They are formulated to be scrubbable and washable, allowing you to easily wipe away fingerprints, smudges, and dirt without damaging the finish. Investing in a premium paint means your walls will look fresh and clean for much longer, reducing the need for frequent touch-ups and repainting.

Blocking Harmful UV Rays

Sunlight streaming through your windows can create a warm and inviting atmosphere, but it also carries damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays. Over time, UV exposure can cause the colors on your walls to fade unevenly, leaving them looking tired and dated. This is particularly noticeable with darker or more vibrant paint colors.

Modern interior paints often contain pigments and binders that are resistant to UV degradation. These advanced formulas help your chosen colors remain true and vibrant, even in the sunniest rooms of your house. Protecting your walls from sun damage ensures your home’s interior looks its best for years.

Enhance Your Home’s Look and Value

Enhance Your Home's Look and Value

While protection is a key function of interior paint, its ability to transform a space aesthetically is what most homeowners get excited about. A new color can completely redefine a room, making it feel larger, cozier, or more modern.

A fresh, professional paint job is also one of the most cost-effective ways to increase your property’s value. For prospective buyers, newly painted walls signal that a home is well-maintained and move-in ready. Neutral, appealing colors can help potential buyers envision themselves living in the space, which can lead to quicker sales and higher offers. It’s a small investment that delivers a significant return.

DIY vs. Professional Painting

DIY vs. Professional Painting

The idea of a DIY paint project can be tempting. It seems like a straightforward way to save money and take pride in your own work. However, achieving a professional-quality finish requires more than just a brush and a can of paint.

A DIY project often involves hidden costs, such as purchasing quality brushes, rollers, drop cloths, and primer. The process is also time-consuming and physically demanding, especially when it comes to proper preparation like sanding, patching holes, and taping edges. Without the right technique, you risk ending up with drips, uneven coverage, and a finish that doesn’t last.

Hiring a professional team like Indiana Painting Company eliminates these risks. Our team of painters have the skills, tools, and knowledge to complete the job efficiently and flawlessly. We handle all the prep work and cleanup, saving you time and stress. Most importantly, we guarantee a durable, beautiful finish that a DIY project simply can’t match.

How to Choose the Right Paint

Selecting the perfect paint involves more than just picking a color. The type and finish are just as important for ensuring your paint job looks great and performs well.

Paint Type

    • Latex (Water-Based): This is the most common type of interior paint. It’s easy to clean up with soap and water, dries quickly, and has low VOCs (volatile organic compounds), making it a healthier choice for your home.
    • Oil-Based: Once the standard, oil-based paints are less common now for interiors due to their strong odor and longer drying times. However, they offer excellent durability and are sometimes used for high-impact areas like trim and doors.

Paint Finish (Sheen)

    • Matte/Flat: This finish has no shine and is great for hiding imperfections on walls. It’s best for low-traffic areas like formal dining rooms and bedrooms.
    • Eggshell/Satin: With a slight sheen, these finishes are more durable and easier to clean than matte. They are a popular choice for living rooms, hallways, and kids’ rooms.
    • Semi-Gloss/Gloss: These high-sheen finishes are highly durable and moisture-resistant, making them ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and trim.

Color Choice

Color has a profound impact on a room’s mood. Warm colors like reds and yellows can make a space feel energetic, while cool colors like blues and greens create a sense of calm. Neutral tones offer timeless versatility. We can help you choose a palette that reflects your personal style and complements your home’s architecture.

Protect Your Indiana Home with Quality Interior Paint

At Indiana Painting Company, we offer a comprehensive range of interior painting services to meet the needs of Indiana homeowners. From initial color consultation to the final walk through, our focus is on delivering exceptional quality and customer satisfaction.

Our team of painters is dedicated to transforming your vision into reality. We use only the highest-quality paints and materials to ensure a long-lasting, beautiful result. We pride ourselves on our meticulous preparation, precise application, and commitment to leaving your home clean and tidy.

How often should I repaint my home’s interior?

The frequency of repainting your interior walls depends on various factors, such as the condition of the walls, the type of room, and how much wear and tear they endure over time. On average, interior walls should be repainted every 5-10 years to maintain a fresh, polished look. However, high-traffic areas such as hallways, kitchens, and kids’ rooms might need a refresh every 3-5 years due to the increased likelihood of scuffs, stains, and grime buildup. On the other hand, low-traffic spaces like formal living rooms or guest bedrooms can go much longer without showing significant signs of wear. Regular maintenance, like cleaning your walls periodically, can also extend the time between paint jobs.

What’s the best paint finish for a home with kids and pets?

When living with kids and pets, choosing the right paint finish can make a world of difference. Eggshell or satin finishes are ideal for such households because they strike the perfect balance between durability and aesthetics. These finishes are tougher and more resistant to stains, making them easy to clean when spills, smudges, or fingerprints inevitably appear. Unlike matte finishes, which absorb stains and are harder to wipe clean, eggshell and satin finishes allow you to easily maintain your walls with just a damp cloth or sponge. For areas that see heavy use, such as playrooms, kitchens, or hallways, these finishes ensure your walls stay looking great while standing up to the daily chaos of family life.

Is professional painting worth the cost?

Hiring a professional painter is often well worth the investment, particularly if you want a high-quality, long-lasting result. While DIY painting might seem like a budget-friendly option at first, it often comes with hidden costs, such as purchasing tools, supplies, and fixing mistakes. Professional painters bring expertise, ensuring every surface is properly prepped, including patching holes, sanding, and priming as needed. They also have access to high-quality paints and tools that deliver a smooth, flawless finish. Additionally, professionals work efficiently, saving you time and effort. They handle all the tedious tasks like taping, cutting in, and cleanup, making the process stress-free. In the long run, a professionally painted room not only looks better but also protects your walls for years to come, saving you money on touch-ups or repaints.

How do I choose the right paint color?

Choosing the right paint color can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! Start by considering the function of the room. For example, soft, calming colors like blues and greens work well in bedrooms, while warm, energetic shades like yellows and reds are ideal for kitchens or dining areas. Next, think about the room’s lighting. Natural light and artificial light can dramatically change how a color looks throughout the day. Don’t forget to consider your existing decor, including furniture, flooring, and accents, to ensure the color complements the space. Sampling is key. Test a few paint samples directly on your walls to see how they look in different lighting conditions before committing to a color. If you’re unsure, our team offers personalized color consultations to help you find the perfect shade and create a cohesive palette that brings your vision to life.

How long will it take to paint my room?

The time it takes to paint a room can vary depending on several factors, including the size of the room, the amount of prep work required, and the type of paint being used. On average, painting a standard-sized room typically takes 1-3 days to complete, starting from preparation and ending with the final coat. Prep work, such as patching holes, sanding walls, and taping edges, can add time but is essential for achieving a smooth finish. Larger spaces or rooms with intricate details, such as crown molding or textured walls, may require additional time to ensure a professional result. Fast-drying paints can speed up the process, but allowing adequate drying time between coats is fundamental for durability. When you work with our team at Indiana Painting Company, we provide a detailed project timeline with our free quote, so you’ll know exactly what to expect from start to finish.

Best Temperature for Exterior Painting: A Homeowner’s Guide

Best Temperature for Exterior Painting: A Homeowner’s Guide

When you decide to paint your home’s exterior, you’re likely focused on choosing the perfect color. However, did you know that the weather on painting day is just as important as the shade you select? Many homeowners are surprised to learn that temperature, humidity, and even overnight lows can make or break a new paint job.

Here in central Indiana, our weather can be unpredictable, especially with the unique challenges that come with each season. A beautiful, sunny day might seem perfect for painting, but if temperatures drop too low at night, you could be facing problems down the road. As a professional Indiana painting company with over 20 years of experience, we know that timing and using the right products are key to a beautiful, long-lasting finish.

At Indiana Painting Company, we will walk you through why the exterior painting temperature is so vital, what the ideal conditions are, and how we ensure every project we undertake is set up for success.

Why Temperature Matters for Exterior Paint

Why Temperature Matters for Exterior Paint

Paint is more than just colored liquid; it’s a chemical product designed to form a protective film. This process, known as curing, allows the paint to dry evenly, adhere correctly, and create a durable barrier against the elements. When paint is applied in the wrong temperature, this delicate chemical process is disrupted.

Even the highest-quality paint, like the Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore products we use, will fail if applied in improper conditions. Here’s what can go wrong:

    • Poor Adhesion: If it’s too cold, the paint can’t form a strong bond with the surface. This leads to the paint failing to stick properly, which is a recipe for future peeling and chipping.
    • Cracking and Peeling: Temperature fluctuations cause surfaces to expand and contract. If the paint hasn’t cured correctly, it can’t move with the surface, causing it to crack and peel away.
    • Uneven Sheen: Paint that dries too quickly in the heat or too slowly in the cold can result in a blotchy, inconsistent finish.
    • Premature Fading: A weakened paint film is more susceptible to UV damage, which causes colors to fade much faster than they should.

Achieving the best paint adhesion starts with applying paint within its recommended temperature range, ensuring your investment is protected for years to come.

Ideal Temperature Range for Exterior Painting

So, what is the magic number for painting your home’s exterior? While it varies slightly by product, there are some industry standards that guide professional painters.

General Industry Standards

Most exterior latex and acrylic paints perform best when the air and surface temperatures are between 50°F and 85°F. This moderate temperature zone allows the paint to flow smoothly for an even application and supports the proper drying and curing process. Within this range, the paint has enough time to level out before it starts to dry, preventing unsightly brush or roller marks.

Importance of Overnight Lows

A common mistake is only looking at the daytime high. The temperature needs to remain above a certain threshold for several hours after application for the paint to cure. If the temperature drops below 35–40°F overnight, the water in latex paint can freeze, ruining the paint’s film and adhesion. This is why a perfect 70°F day can still be a bad day for painting if a cold front is moving in.

Temperature Fluctuations

Indiana is known for its temperature swings. A 30-degree difference between the daytime high and nighttime low can put stress on a fresh coat of paint. Stable weather is often more important than a single perfect temperature reading. We look for consistent weather patterns to ensure the paint has the best possible environment to cure properly.

How Winter Weather Affects Exterior Painting

How Winter Weather Affects Exterior Painting

With our Indiana winters, homeowners often ask if exterior painting is even possible. While challenging, it’s not always out of the question.

Challenges of Cold Weather Painting

Painting in the cold presents several risks:

    • Slower Dry Times: Cold temperatures significantly slow down the curing process, leaving the paint wet for longer and vulnerable to collecting dust and debris.
    • Moisture Issues: Morning dew and frost are common in colder months. Painting over a damp surface is a guarantee for paint failure, as the moisture gets trapped and prevents adhesion.
    • Reduced Adhesion: Cold surfaces make it difficult for paint to form a strong bond, increasing the likelihood of peeling.

When Winter Painting Is Possible

In some cases, exterior work can be done safely during winter. We look for windows of opportunity, such as extended dry spells, midday warm-ups that bring surface temperatures into a safe range, and focusing on surfaces that receive direct sunlight.

Low-Temperature Paints

Modern paint technology has come a long way. There are now specialty paints, like Sherwin-Williams’ Resilience® or Benjamin Moore’s Aura® Exterior, that are formulated to cure at temperatures as low as 35°F. At Indiana Painting Company, we use these advanced products when conditions demand it, allowing us to extend the painting season while still delivering the durable, high-quality finish our clients expect.

Risks of Painting in High Temperatures

Risks of Painting in High Temperatures

Just as cold is an issue, extreme heat can also ruin an exterior paint job. This is something for homeowners to keep in mind when planning spring and summer projects.

    • Paint Drying Too Quickly: When it’s too hot, the paint can dry almost as soon as it’s applied. This prevents it from leveling out, leading to visible brush and roller marks.
    • Blistering: If the surface is hot, the paint’s top layer can dry before the solvents underneath have evaporated. This traps the solvents, which then form bubbles or blisters as they try to escape.
    • Weakened Paint Film: Paint that cures too fast doesn’t have time to form the strong, interlocking film needed for long-term durability.

Tips for Homeowners: Is It the Right Day to Paint?

If you’re considering a DIY project, here’s how to tell if you’ve got the right conditions:

    • Check the extended forecast, not just the day’s high. Look for a stable 2-3 day window.
    • Avoid windy days, which can cause paint to dry too fast, and humid days, which slow drying.
    • Check the surface temperature. A surface in direct sunlight can be 10-15 degrees hotter than the air temperature.
    • When in doubt, call a professional. A quick evaluation can save you from a costly mistake.

What happens if it rains after my house is painted?

Most modern latex paints are resistant to light rain after just a few hours of drying. However, a heavy downpour on a fresh coat can cause issues. Our team carefully monitors the forecast to avoid this, but we also use quick-drying, high-quality paints to minimize risk.

How long does exterior paint need to dry before the temperature drops?

This depends on the specific product, but generally, the paint should have at least 4-6 hours of drying time in the ideal temperature range before the temperature falls below the recommended minimum. We always check the manufacturer’s specifications.

Can you paint vinyl siding?

Absolutely! Painting vinyl siding is a great way to update your home’s look without the cost of replacement. We use specialized paints like PPG AcriShield Max that are formulated for excellent adhesion and flexibility on vinyl surfaces.

What is the difference between air temperature and surface temperature?

Air temperature is the temperature of the surrounding air, while surface temperature is the temperature of the actual material being painted (siding, trim, etc.). Dark-colored surfaces or those in direct sunlight can be much hotter than the air, which is why we measure both before starting a project.

Our Three Levels of Painting Service

Good, Better, Best Painting Packages | Indiana Painting

Indiana Painting Company offers Good, Better and Best residential painting packages so homeowners can choose the level of preparation, paint performance and warranty or touch-up support that fits their home. The difference is not simply price. Each level is designed around the condition of the surfaces, product options and the amount of long-term support you want.

How Indiana Painting’s Good, Better and Best Service Levels Work

Not every home needs the same painting approach.

Walls with significant wear may need more preparation than walls that are already in good condition. A busy family room may benefit from a more washable, scuff-resistant paint than a lightly used guest room. On an exterior, the condition of the existing coating, caulk and substrate can influence how much preparation is appropriate.

That’s why Indiana Painting Company offers three residential service levels instead of treating every project the same.

Good provides professional preparation, proven paint products and a workmanship warranty.

Better increases the level of preparation and adds touch-up support during the warranty period.

Best provides the most thorough preparation within the contracted painting scope, premium product choices and Indiana Painting’s highest level of touch-up support.

Your project consultant can help you compare the options based on the actual condition of your home rather than automatically recommending the highest tier.

Interior Painting Packages: Good vs. Better vs. Best

Good Interior Painting

Our Good interior package is designed for homeowners who want professional preparation and dependable paint products without paying for a level of preparation or ongoing touch-up service they may not need.

We power sand the walls, patch holes and address major defects included in the painting scope. Approved paint choices include PPG Hi-Hide, PPG Pure Performance and Behr i300.

The Good interior package includes a three-year workmanship warranty.

This level can make sense when the walls are generally in reasonable condition, the space receives moderate use or your primary goal is a clean, professional refresh.

Better Interior Painting

Better adds more detailed surface preparation by addressing medium as well as major defects within the contracted scope.

Approved paint options include Behr Ultra, Benjamin Moore Ben Interior and PPG Prominence.

Better also adds one touch-up session during the three-year warranty period.

This can be a strong middle-ground option for homeowners who want more surface correction and additional support after the initial project without moving all the way to the Best package.

Best Interior Painting

Best provides Indiana Painting’s most thorough interior preparation level. We power sand the walls, patch holes and address all defects that fall within the contracted painting-preparation scope.

That distinction matters. Painting preparation does not mean correcting structural problems, hidden moisture damage, substrate failure or other repairs that are outside the agreed project scope.

Approved Best-level products include PPG Ultralast, Behr Marquee and Benjamin Moore Regal Select Interior.

The Best package also includes Indiana Painting’s three-year touch-up-inclusive warranty with up to three touch-up sessions.

For homeowners concerned about long-term appearance, washability, frequent household activity or maintaining freshly painted spaces, the combination of enhanced prep, premium products and touch-up support can make Best worth considering.

Exterior Painting Packages: Good vs. Better vs. Best

May be a good fit for Exteriors in reasonably sound condition needing professional repainting Homes requiring additional caulking/prep or added touch-up protection Homeowners wanting the most thorough contracted preparation, premium product choices and maximum touch-up support

Good Exterior Painting

Our Good exterior package starts with the preparation necessary for a professional exterior repaint.

We pressure wash the surfaces, repair failing caulk, scrape loose paint, spot-prime where appropriate and apply two coats.

The approved product for this level is PPG Acri-Shield Exterior, a proven exterior coating Indiana Painting has used with confidence.

Good exterior painting includes our seven-year workmanship warranty.

For an exterior that is generally in sound condition and doesn’t require the additional preparation or touch-up support of the higher tiers, Good may provide the right balance.

Better Exterior Painting

Better builds on the Good-level process with more thorough caulking repair or replacement and preparation appropriate to medium and major defects within the contracted scope.

We continue to use PPG Acri-Shield Exterior at this level because its performance makes it appropriate for both packages.

The major difference is not simply the paint. Better combines additional preparation with a seven-year touch-up-inclusive warranty that includes one touch-up session.

That can make Better especially attractive when an exterior needs more prep or when you want additional support after the initial project.

Best Exterior Painting

Best provides our most thorough exterior preparation within the contracted project scope.

The exact preparation required depends on the surfaces Indiana Painting finds during the evaluation and what is included in your proposal. Exterior preparation should not be interpreted as a promise to correct structural damage, hidden moisture problems, substrate failure or other repairs outside the painting contract.

Approved Best-level exterior products include PPG Permanizer, Behr Marquee Exterior and Benjamin Moore Regal Select Exterior.

Best also provides Indiana Painting’s highest level of exterior touch-up support: an unlimited touch-up warranty for seven years.

For homeowners planning to remain in their home, exteriors requiring more preparation, or customers who place a high priority on long-term appearance and touch-up support, Best may provide the greatest value.

Which Painting Package Is Right for Your Home?

There isn’t one service level that’s automatically right for every homeowner. The best choice depends on what we’re painting, its current condition and what you expect from the finished project.

Choose Good When…

Good may make sense when your surfaces are generally in reasonable condition and your priority is a professional repaint with proper preparation and a workmanship warranty.

It can also be appropriate when you don’t need the expanded defect correction or touch-up benefits of the higher packages.

Choose Better When…

Better may be the right fit when surfaces have more visible defects, the exterior requires additional caulking work, or you value having a touch-up session included during the warranty period.

For many homeowners, Better provides a useful balance between additional preparation, product performance and long-term support.

Choose Best When…

Best may make sense when surface appearance is particularly important, the contracted project requires Indiana Painting’s most detailed preparation, the painted areas receive substantial wear, or you want the highest level of touch-up support available.

It can also be worth considering when you’re planning to remain in the home and want to prioritize long-term performance over minimizing the initial project investment.

What Should You Consider Before Choosing Good, Better or Best?

Surface Condition

Look beyond color.

Dents, patched areas, cracking, failing caulk, loose coatings and other imperfections can affect how much preparation is needed before painting begins. The more preparation a surface requires, the more important it becomes to compare the preparation included with each package.

Your quote is the right time to identify which defects can be addressed through painting preparation and whether any conditions fall outside the painting scope.

Durability

Think about how the painted surface will be used.

A quiet guest bedroom doesn’t face the same wear as a hallway, family room or other frequently used area. Premium product choices can be especially valuable where walls are more likely to encounter everyday wear.

Exterior durability is more complex. The useful life of an exterior coating depends on factors including the substrate, existing condition, preparation, weather exposure, selected coating and ongoing maintenance. A premium product can be part of a longer-term strategy, but no responsible painter should promise the same lifespan for every house.

Washability

If you’re painting spaces that are frequently touched, bumped or cleaned, washability may deserve more weight in your decision.

Homes with children, pets or active households may benefit from considering the higher-performance interior products available in the Better or Best packages.

Odor Sensitivity

If paint odor is an important concern for your household, tell your Indiana Painting project consultant during the quote.

Product selection can be discussed as part of the overall package recommendation so that performance and household comfort are considered together.

Household Traffic

Hallways, kitchens, family rooms, children’s rooms and other heavily used spaces typically face more wear than formal dining rooms or guest rooms.

You don’t have to choose based solely on the name of the package. Think about how you actually live in the space and how much ongoing touch-up support matters to you.

How Long You Plan to Own the Home

Your plans for the property can also influence the decision.

Someone preparing a home for a near-term move may have different priorities than a homeowner who expects to live there for many years.

If you’re staying long term, investing in more detailed preparation, higher-performance products or expanded touch-up support may provide more value to you over time.

Compare the Options for Your Home

You don’t need to decide between Good, Better and Best before talking with us.

During your free painting quote, Indiana Painting Company can evaluate your actual walls or exterior surfaces, discuss what level of preparation they need and explain which product and warranty options make sense for your goals.

The objective isn’t to sell every homeowner the highest package. It’s to help you understand what you’re getting at each level so you can choose the right investment for your home.

Schedule your free painting quote and compare Good, Better and Best options for your actual surfaces.

Do you perform background checks on your employees?

Yes, your safety is our top priority. We conduct thorough background checks and drug screenings on every employee before they join our team to ensure you get a dedicated, trustworthy, and professional crew working on your project.

How long does an exterior paint job last?

With high-quality paints from manufacturers like PPG, Behr, and Benjamin Moore, and proper professional application, you can expect an exterior paint job to last 10 to 20 years. Our seven-year warranty ensures your investment is protected.

Do you replace rotten wood?

Absolutely. A great paint job starts with a solid surface. Our team is equipped to handle most wood replacement needs for trim, siding, and frames as part of our exterior painting service.

What is your warranty for painting services?

Our interior painting services come with a three-year workmanship warranty. Our exterior services are backed by a seven-year warranty. Upgraded tiers (Better and Best) include touch-up services for added peace of mind.

Two Decades of Craftsmanship & Wisdom

Chris began painting in 2002, starting his career with his uncle’s new construction painting company in Carmel, Indiana. From those early days painting custom homes, he developed a passion for quality and precision that still defines his approach today.

When it comes to home projects, Chris shares a simple piece of advice straight from his experience:

“Sanding walls and using multiple coats of drywall mud is better than one big glob to repair a wall anchor hole.”

His favorite color to paint, perhaps fitting his preference for enduring quality, is gray—a timeless choice that complements nearly any space.

The Precision of a Master Painter

Chris has built up an impressive skill set over the years, but the technique he is most proud of mastering is stripe design. He calls this detailed work both his favorite and most challenging, particularly the project that involved creating precise lines using nine different colors!

When asked what makes Indiana Painting stand out, Chris points to the company’s culture, noting how much the team appreciates its employees and how everyone works hard to deliver quality results, even on tight deadlines.

In a hypothetical trade, Chris says he would switch jobs for a day with Bob, the President of Indiana Painting, to get a firsthand look at managing day-to-day operations and running the business.

Beyond the Brush: Team & Family

Outside of work, Chris enjoys spending time with his wife, kids, and grandkids. You’ll often find them camping, visiting waterparks, or walking the Blue River trails—always making the most of time together outdoors.
