How we work

Residential Exterior Painting Process

Your home’s exterior works hard—protecting your property while creating lasting curb appeal. That’s why getting the job done right the first time matters.

Residential exterior painting process

Step 1

Thorough Preparation

We start by pressure washing your home’s exterior, removing dirt, atmospheric grime, and loose paint. Our yard vacuums collect all paint chips, keeping your property spotless throughout the project.

Step 2

Comprehensive Protection

We carefully cover all outdoor furniture, plants, and fixtures that can’t be moved, ensuring your belongings stay safe from overspray and debris.

Step 3

Professional Priming & Sealing

Any bare areas receive spot priming for optimal protection. We then inspect your home’s exterior and caulk all joints with a premium urethanized acrylic sealant that provides long-lasting, flexible sealing between lap boards and other connections.

Step 4

Premium Paint Application

We apply two coats of high-quality paint in your chosen color. The paint depends on the level you choose: Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint Exterior for Basic, Duration Exterior for Better or Emerald Exterior for Best, all made to resist fading and peeling on wood, fiber cement, metal and vinyl siding.

Products we trust

Exterior Paint Materials We Recommend

Protecting your home from Indiana’s unpredictable weather starts with choosing the right exterior paint. At Indiana Painting, we understand the unique challenges that Hoosier homeowners face throughout the year.

Indiana’s climate puts your home’s exterior through a relentless cycle of weather extremes. Summer brings scorching temperatures and intense UV radiation that can fade and crack inferior paint finishes. Spring and fall deliver heavy rainfall that tests your paint’s water resistance, while winter’s freezing temperatures and ice can cause expansion and contraction that leads to peeling and chipping.

That’s why we exclusively use premium, weather-resistant paints specifically formulated for the Midwest climate. These high-performance coatings create a durable barrier against moisture penetration, resist UV damage, and maintain their flexibility through temperature fluctuations. The result? A beautiful, long-lasting finish that keeps your home protected and looking its best year after year.

FAQs

Exterior Painting FAQs

As a ballpark, a one-story ranch of about 1,600 sq ft is around $6,800, and a two-story home of about 2,600 sq ft is around $11,700. That includes pressure washing, spot priming, caulking and repairs, and two coats of Sherwin-Williams Duration Exterior on the siding, doors, trim, eaves, gutters and downspouts. Your exact price is confirmed at your free quote. Get a ballpark price for your home.

Most home exteriors take several days to a week, depending on the size of your home, the prep needed and the weather. Your written quote includes the schedule.

We paint home exteriors from about April through October. Depending on the weather we may start in April or wait until May, and we aim to finish exterior work by the end of October so the paint goes on and cures in the right temperature and humidity. We watch the forecast and will reschedule rather than paint in poor conditions.

A quality exterior paint job typically lasts 10 to 20 years. Premium paint applied over properly cleaned, scraped and primed surfaces lasts longest, while harsh sun, moisture, poor prep and low-quality paint shorten that.

It depends on the service level you choose: Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint Exterior for Basic, Duration Exterior for Better and Emerald Exterior for Best, with an upgrade to self-cleaning Emerald Rain Refresh available.

Every exterior project comes with our written 7-year workmanship warranty. Better adds one touch-up visit during those seven years, and Best includes unlimited touch-ups for the full seven years.

We use cotton drop cloths (never plastic, which can overheat plants) and walk boards to keep our painters off your flower beds, and we clean up paint chips and debris every day.

We find the cause first, then fix it. Peeling, fading, chalking, blistering and cracking usually come from moisture, UV and Indiana’s temperature swings. We check the prep, previous coatings and moisture, then build a repair plan (repairs, primer and proper prep) before repainting. For complex failures we bring in certified third-party inspectors.
