As your partner in commercial painting, we always do our best to find the best products for your interior painting projects. We have products from the four major manufacturers in the Indianapolis market that we recommend for different needs and budgets. Today, we will look at Behr Scuff Defense, Sherwin Williams Scuff Tough, PPG Ultralast, and Benjamin Moore Scuff X as a solution for your high traffic walls.
First we should note that, if you are a commercial property manager, you should be on at least a five year paint cycle to keep you walls looking their best. There is no paint that will stand up to constant use and still look good in a few years. At this point, I want to caution you against a common strategy for commercial repaints. Many companies are pushing pre-catalyzed epoxy as a good product for your commercial spaces. These products are easily painted over if prepped properly first. Second, that prep is only a light sanding, so this should tell you that the technology these products depend on is hardness and these paints are often easy to damage or abrade. The new paints we offer will resits scratching and scuffing much better. The addage we live by is that “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.” If you are on a really tight budget and 10% matters to you, let our project consultants know and we will do our best to pick methods and products that can help you save as much as possible.
Let’s dig into the best scuff resistant paints on the market. In our opinion, PPG and Benjamin Moore are currently offering the best products on the market at the moment. We have used both of them with a high degree of success on high traffic commercial walls like event spaces, hospitality corridors, and churches. PPG Ultralast is a great product and the price is very reasonable. PPG claims that the technology comes from their automotive line and is very easy to paint over even after a few years. Benjamin Moore Scuff X comes with a higher price tag, but has a finished look and performance that is unmatched. If you aren’t constrained by a budget, this is the product we’d recommend. These are our top contenders for a high quality, truly scuff resistant coating.
The products offered by Behr and Sherwin Williams are good contenders, but just don’t perform up to the PPG and Benjamin Moore products. Scuff Tough from Sherwin Williams is used on many new commercial builds where the owner’s are really wanting to get more longevity on their initial paint job. This is a relatively new product and we hope that it will prove to be a valuable option on our commercial painting projects. Behr offers the Scuff Defense product that truly is scuff resistant and very affordable, but it just doesn’t perform quite like the others. We still recommend it for cost conscious customers like churches and car dealerships as it is still better than standard commercial wall paint.
In summary, our top option for cost and performance is PPG Ultralast. Second, is Benjamin Moore Scuff X whose performance is a bit better, but the price tag is a good bit more. Sherwin Williams and Behr make good, solid products for those on budget. These last two products actually look a bit better in terms of finish, but just don’t have the technology to match the top scuff resistant paints.
